Sinus Augmentation

How is the sinus augmentation procedure performed?

The key to a long-lasting and successful dental implant is having sufficient, high-quality jaw bone to support it. When bone loss has occurred—whether due to injury or periodontal disease—a sinus augmentation can raise the sinus floor to promote new bone formation.
In a typical sinus augmentation procedure, the surgeon exposes the jawbone at the implant site and creates a small opening in the bone. The sinus lining is carefully lifted upward, creating a space that is then filled with bone graft material, which may be sourced from your own body or from a donor cadaver. Once the graft is in place, a protective membrane is applied to the opening, and the incision is closed to allow for healing.
During the healing process, which takes several months, the graft material integrates with your natural bone, establishing a robust foundation for future dental implants. In cases where there is enough existing bone between the upper jaw ridge and the sinus floor, sinus augmentation and implant placement can sometimes occur simultaneously. However, if the bone volume is severely deficient, the graft must first mature before implants can be securely placed.
Sinus grafting has transformed the options for many patients—what once may have meant relying on removable dentures now opens the door to fixed, stable dental implants.

What is a sinus augmentation?

The maxillary sinuses are located behind your cheeks and above your upper teeth, serving as air-filled cavities. In many cases, the roots of your natural upper teeth extend into these sinuses. When these teeth are removed, what remains is often a thin layer of bone separating the sinus from the mouth. Because dental implants require a robust amount of bone for secure placement, a very thin sinus wall can make implant placement unfeasible.
