The inferior alveolar nerve, which provides sensation to the lower lip and chin, may need to be repositioned to create space for dental implants in the lower jaw. This is specific to the lower jaw, especially when teeth are missing near the two back molars and/or the second premolar. Relocating the nerve can cause postoperative numbness in the lower lip and jaw that may last a long time, so other options are usually considered first.
During the procedure, bone covering the cheek side of the lower jaw is removed to expose the nerve and blood vessels. These are carefully moved aside for the implant and bone graft. After placement, the nerve and vessels are repositioned, and the site is filled with bone graft material before closing.
If Dr. Hagar thinks you're a good candidate and you're interested, he will refer you to a specialist. These surgeries are typically done under IV sedation or general anesthesia.
